Article Synopsis
  • Acute pancreatitis (AP) can be severe and unpredictable, and this study explored metabolic and lipoprotein profiles in AP patients of African descent to better understand its pathophysiology for improved prognosis and management.
  • Serum samples from 30 AP patients of varying severity and 9 healthy controls were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to identify metabolic signals and lipoprotein characteristics.
  • Key findings showed that increased levels of certain metabolites (3-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate) and decreased ascorbate correlate with AP severity, while lipid profiles differ from healthy controls, suggesting that these metabolic indicators can help differentiate AP states and inform treatment decisions.

Background: Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer characterized by an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Patients from specific ethnicities and population groups have poorer prognoses than others. Therefore, a better understanding of the immune landscape in such groups is necessary for disease elucidation, predicting patient outcomes and therapeutic targeting.

Background: Thyroid cancer is prevalent both internationally and locally, and is the most common cause of endocrine malignancies in Africa. The prognosis of thyroid cancer in general is quite good, but to achieve good outcomes, appropriate methods for diagnosis are important. A cytology result obtained from a fine needle aspiration and biopsy (FNAB) is one such method, and is less invasive and has less risk compared with obtaining a histological result via open surgery.
