Gender issues in livestock production: a case study of Zimbabwe.

The importance of main streaming gender issues in development programmes is now recognized by governments and development agents. This paper evaluates the role of gender in smallholder livestock production using Zimbabwe as a case study. It draws on several studies and assesses the gender dimension in terms of access and control, decision making and, division of labour.

Unidentified coryneform bacterial strain from cases of polyarthritis in chickens: phenotype and fatty acid profile.

We report isolation of a strain of fermentative coryneform bacteria from an outbreak of polyarthritis in chickens. This strain could not be assigned to any recognized bacterial taxon because its peculiar phenotype is not yet reported. The strain possessed phenotypic characteristics and fatty acid profile similar to Erysipelothrix but, on the other hand, exhibited temperature-dependent motility like Listeria.

Vaccination to control an outbreak of Mycoplasma crocodyli infection.

Details of a severe outbreak of M. crocodyli infection in farmed crocodiles are reported. The outbreak was suspected to have been precipitated by translocation-related stress on the animals brought from a farm with a known history of M.

Strains of Actinobacillus spp. from diseases of animals and ostriches in Zimbabwe.

Among the Actinobacillus spp. only A. lignieresii represents a homogenous and well studied taxon.
