Balance between sleep, wakefulness and arousal is important for survival of organisms and species as a whole. While, the benefits of sleep both in terms of quantity and quality is widely recognized across species, sleep has a cost for organismal survival and reproduction. Here we focus on how sleep duration, sleep depth and sleep pressure affect the ability of animals to engage in courtship and egg-laying behaviors critical for reproductive success.

Clinical outcomes of gamma-irradiated sterile cornea in aqueous drainage device surgery: a multicenter retrospective study.

PurposeThe purpose of the study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of gamma-irradiated sterile cornea (GISC) for covering the tube in aqueous drainage device (ADD) surgery in a retrospective, multicenter case series.Patients and methodsParticipants included 297 patients (321 procedures) who had undergone ADD surgery for the first time using GISC patch at three clinic centers in the United States between April 2009 and July 2012. The medical records of those consecutive patients were reviewed.

Coverage, compliance, acceptability and feasibility of a program to prevent pre-eclampsia and eclampsia through calcium supplementation for pregnant women: an operations research study in one district of Nepal.

Background: Calcium supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the incidence of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia among women with low calcium intake. Universal free calcium supplementation through government antenatal care (ANC) services was piloted in the Dailekh district of Nepal. Coverage, compliance, acceptability and feasibility of the intervention were evaluated.

Background: Cellular function and diversity are orchestrated by complex interactions of fundamental biomolecules including DNA, RNA and proteins. Technological advances in genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics and proteomics have enabled massively parallel and unbiased measurements. Such high-throughput technologies have been extensively used to carry out broad, unbiased studies, particularly in the context of human diseases.
