The source control of pharmaceuticals involves influencing the everyday consumption volume and compound choice. This paper evaluates how source control contributes to protecting the environmental health and decreasing the investment needs in urban wastewater infrastructure. Different levels of reduction in diclofenac consumption (as recommended by the European Medicines Agency) compensated by equivalent increases in naproxen consumption (a less environmentally harmful compound) are evaluated.

Investments for upgrading wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with tertiary treatment to reduce microcontaminant loads in surface waters at a catchment scale can be daunting. These investments are highly sensitive to the selection of environmental quality standards (EQSs) for the target microcontaminants. This manuscript, based on the ISO 10993-7 approach, describes a multiple HS-GC measurement of residual EO present in sterilized plastic samples. The quantification of EO is done, according to the ISO standard, by addition of EO amounts extracted for each repeated extraction. During the method development, the specificity of the detection of EO regarding acetaldehyde (structural isomer of EO) which may be formed from EO has been ensured and different tests were performed to check a possible influence of the sample preparation.

Models of microcontaminant fate and transport in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and rivers have been developed and used to assist decision-making in the field of water management. These models come with parameter uncertainties that must be properly incorporated in the decision-making process. The main goal of this study is to evaluate how the magnitudes of key model parameter uncertainties influence the selection of end-of-pipe interventions (at WWTPs) designed to reduce the microcontaminant loads in rivers.
