The role of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) in regulation by IGF-II of glycogenesis and DNA synthesis was investigated in hepatocytes isolated from fetal rat livers at days 15 and 18 of gestation and grown in the presence or absence of cortisol. IGFBP-1 was clearly revealed by Western ligand blot and immunoblot analysis of IGFBPs secreted into conditioned media. Its production and cellular messenger RNA (mRNA) were positively regulated by cortisol and increased in older cells.
