Wastewater from many food and beverage manufacturers is enriched in organic content, and it must therefore be treated before being discharged to comply with the strict environmental regulations to protect the final water quality. Concretely, the honey processing wastewater, that remains in holding tanks until is disposal, is a rich source of sugars and this high level of organic material will degrade the water quality if not treated properly provoking an imbalance in the ecosystem. There are different strategies for an adequate treatment of this wastewater effluent to obtain a sustainable usage.

The application of water bioremediation processes for this kind of effluent will require microorganisms with a high tolerance to contamination. In this sense, obtaining higher contaminant-resistant microalgae lines is widely desired.

The pathogenesis is due to toxin A and B (TcdA/TcdB), both causing cytopathic and cytotoxic effects and inflammation. Recently, we demonstrated that TcdB induces cytopathic and cytotoxic (apoptosis and necrosis) effects in enteric glial cells (EGCs) in a dose/time-dependent manner and described the underlying signaling.

To assess the inhibition of the inflammasome by the ICP27, hTert-immortalized Retinal Pigment Epithelial cells (hTert-RPE 1) infected with HSV-1 wild type were compared to HSV-1 lacking functional ICP27 (HSV-1∆ICP27) infected cells. The activation of the inflammasome by HSV-1∆ICP27 was demonstrated by quantifying the gene and protein expression of the inflammasome constituents using real-time PCR and Western blot.
