Hypertension, particularly severe hypertension, has proven to be a risk factor for renal disease. Whether the relationship of blood pressure (BP) and high renal disease exists across a wide range of BP levels has been less clear. Compared with whites, blacks have a higher rate of end-stage renal disease from a multiplicity of causes, including hypertension, most prominently in younger age groups.

A particular cachectic syndrome, the "slim disease", which is highly suggestive of AIDS in Africa, constitutes the substratum for the clinical definition for AIDS. The WHO/Bangui definition in adults has a sensitivity of 60%, a specificity of 90%, and a high predictive value especially in endemic areas.

The current study tested the hypothesis that chronic administration of the neutral endopeptidase (NEP) inhibitor Sch 34826 prevents NaCl sensitive hypertension in SHR-S by increasing endogenous ANP. Male SHR-S received Sch 34826 (90 mg/kg/day) or vehicle by gavage for 4 weeks beginning immediately before the initiation of 1% or 8% NaCl diets at age 7 weeks.
