Karl Landsteiner discovered ABO blood group system in the early 20 century, but still, uncertainty remains in immunohematology while detection of ABO subgroups or weaker variants. The presence of weak subgroups in patient samples gives rise to the discrepancy in forward (cell) and reverse (serum) grouping. We here report a case of the B(A) phenotype in a patient who was diagnosed with chronic liver disease with acute pancreatitis, requiring packed red blood cells due to anemia.

This process informs donors about their status as to transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI), modes of transmission of such infections and helps prevent secondary transmission of these infections in the community.

Today, PCR using broad-range primers is being used increasingly to detect pathogens from resected heart valves. Herein is described the first case of multivalve infective endocarditis where 16S rDNA PCR was used to detect a single pathogen from two affected valves in a 61-year-old man. Triple heart valve replacement was required despite six weeks of appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
