Article Synopsis
  • - The review discusses the importance of preventing surgical site infections (SSIs), which can lead to severe health complications, and how povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is utilized throughout different surgical stages for this purpose.
  • - Research indicates that PVP-I is effective at preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative stages, showing a significant reduction in SSI rates when used for skin preparation and irrigation.
  • - Despite the positive findings, there is a call for more rigorous clinical trials to better compare PVP-I with other antiseptic agents and to explore the potential benefits of using a single agent across all surgical stages.

Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were used for screening and selection, and 45 studies were chosen.
