Their biosynthesis is mediated by aminopropyl transferases (APTs), which are promising targets for antimicrobial, antineoplastic, and antineurodegenerative therapies. Understanding the protonation behavior of metal-oxo water oxidation catalysts is essential to improve catalyst efficiency and long-term performance, as well as to tune their properties for specific applications. In this work, we explore the basicity and protonation effects of the highly active water oxidation catalyst [(Mn4O4) (V4O13) (OAc)3]3- using density functional theory. We computed the relative free energies of protonation in a systematic fashion for all symmetry-inequivalent O atoms, where the presence of multiple oxidation states from Mn4IV to Mn4III and a rich Jahn-Teller isomerism adds a significant amount of complexity.

Potassium-40 is a widespread, naturally occurring isotope whose radioactivity impacts subatomic rare-event searches, nuclear structure theory, and estimated geological ages. A predicted electron-capture decay directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been observed. The KDK (potassium decay) collaboration reports strong evidence of this rare decay mode.

The potential of enriched Pb (Pb) was assessed to monitor pathways of trace levels of Pb in the pg range within the human body via isotope pattern variation in situations where natural lead cannot be used as a tracer due to regulatory limitations. Isotope ratio measurements were accomplished by means of (multi-collector) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry including a comparison of single and multi-collector ICP-MS for low-level Pb assessment. Isotopic pattern results from a blend of a large quantity of the element with a natural isotopic composition and an enriched stable isotope at orders of magnitude lower levels pose a nontrivial analytical problem.
