Genome mining has emerged as an important tool for the discovery of natural products and is particularly effective for the swift identification of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs). Among RiPPs, cyanobactins have gained attention due to their diverse structures and bioactive properties. Here, we explored the Microcoleaceae cyanobacterium LEGE 16532 strain and identified the biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC), which was predicted to encode cyanobactin-like molecules.

Actinomycetota are unrivalled producers of bioactive natural products, with strains living in association with macroalgae representing a prolific-yet largely unexplored-source of specialised chemicals. In this work, we have investigated the bioactive potential of Actinomycetota from macroalgae through culture-dependent and -independent approaches. A bioprospecting pipeline was applied to a collection of 380 actinobacterial strains, recovered from two macroalgae species collected in the Portuguese northern shore-Codium tomentosum and Chondrus crispus-in order to explore their ability to produce antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer and lipid-reducing compounds.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied cyanobacterial dialkylresorcinol bartolosides, initially thought to have glycosylated and halogenated structures.
  • They found that these compounds can form esters through a process involving chlorinated alkyl chains and fatty acids, leading to a variety of bartoloside derivatives.
  • The study identified 27 bartoloside and ester variants, including two new types, and revealed new structural features like hydroxylation that were not previously linked to this metabolite group.

Article Synopsis
  • Asgard archaea, key ancestors of Eukaryotes, have mobile genetic elements (MGEs) that are not well understood, and this study investigates two complete genomes from the Atabeyarchaeia lineage to explore these elements.
  • The research identifies 18 MGEs in Atabeyarchaeia, including a notable 20.67 kbp circular plasmid and specific viruses that might influence their evolution through gene interactions.
  • Differences in defense mechanisms, such as restriction-modification systems, between Atabeyarchaeia and another Asgard archaea, Freyarchaeia, highlight how these systems can affect the relationship with MGEs and contribute to genetic diversity in these organisms.*

In viticulture, choosing the most suitable rootstock for a specific scion cultivar is an efficient and cost-effective way to increase yield and enhance the physicochemical characteristics of the fruit. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of the 'BRS Tainá' grapevine on different rootstocks under the conditions of the Sub-Middle São Francisco Valley. The main experimental factor consisted of eight rootstocks (IAC 313, IAC 572, IAC 766, 101-14 MgT, Paulsen 1103, Ramsey, SO4, and Teleki 5C), arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates.
