It mainly affects immunosuppressed patients, and in particular human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, where it typically presents as cavitary pneumonia. Early treatment with combined and effective antimicrobials and antiretroviral therapy after prompt diagnosis is essential to ensure an optimal outcome.

Using lake sediments to assess the long-term impacts of anthropogenic activity in tropical river deltas.

Tropical river deltas, and the social-ecological systems they sustain, are changing rapidly due to anthropogenic activity and climatic change. Baseline data to inform sustainable management options for resilient deltas is urgently needed and palaeolimnology (reconstructing past conditions from lake or wetland deposits) can provide crucial long-term perspectives needed to identify drivers and rates of change. We review how palaeolimnology can be a valuable tool for resource managers using three current issues facing tropical delta regions: hydrology and sediment supply, salinisation and nutrient pollution.

The detection of N-nitrosamines in drug products has raised global regulatory interest in recent years due to the carcinogenic potential of some nitrosamines in animals and a need to identify a testing strategy has emerged. Ideally, methods used would allow for the use of quantitative analysis of dose-response data from in vivo genotoxicity assays to determine a compound-specific acceptable intake for novel nitrosamines without sufficient carcinogenicity data. In a previous study we compared the dose-response relationships of N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) in three in vivo genotoxicity endpoints in rats.
