Background: In the cervicovaginal environment, HPV acquisition and cervical cancer progression are linked to non-Lactobacillus dominance, of which Atopobiaceae are key taxa. We hypothesize that Atopobiaceae modulates the cervicovaginal microenvironment to promote HPV persistence and progression to cancer. However, the extent to which Atopobiaceae impact the immunometabolic microenvironment is poorly understood.

Vaginal dysbiosis is implicated in persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer. Yet, there is a paucity of data on the vaginal microbiome in Native American communities. Here, we aimed to elucidate the relationships between microbiome, HPV, sociodemographic, and behavioral risk factors to better understand an increased cervical cancer risk in Native American women.

Phenyllactic acid (PLA), is a naturally produced, broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound with activity against bacteria and fungi. PLA can be produced by a variety of lactic acid bacteria, including vaginal species, which are healthy constituents of the vaginal microbiome with a protective role against invading pathogenic bacteria and/or fungi. Additionally, PLA has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, overall indicating its therapeutic potential as an intravaginally delivered compound for modulation of the vaginal microbiome.
