Objectives: To develop and practically test high-precision femtosecond laser ablation models for dental hard tissue that are useful for detailed planning of automated laser dental restorative treatment.

Methods: Analytical models are proposed, derived, and demonstrated for practical calculation of ablation rates, ablation efficiency and ablated morphology of human dental enamel and dentin using femtosecond lasers. The models assume an effective optical attenuation coefficient for the irradiated material.

Sunlight disinfection is important for treatment of wastewater within maturation ponds. This study analyses the movement of Escherichi coli within a slice of a maturation pond, being affected by stratification, sunlight attenuation and mixing driven by wind shear and natural convection using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Since the exposure to ultraviolet light is most effective in the near-surface region of the pond, natural convective mixing mechanisms to transport the pathogens from the lower parts of the pond are critical for disinfection efficacy.

Buoyancy-driven turbulent dispersion in a maturation pond is studied using a combination of field measurements and computational fluid dynamics. Modelling flow in maturation ponds requires turbulent closure models because of the large physical size and the need to model on diurnal timescales. Simulation results are shown to be more sensitive to the inclusion of a buoyancy production term appearing in the turbulent transport equations than to the model choice.

Maturation ponds are a type of waste stabilisation pond (WSP) designed to reduce carbon, nutrients and pathogens in the final stages of a WSP wastewater treatment system. In this study, a one-dimensional plug-flow pond model is proposed to predict temperature and E. coli concentration distributions and overall pond disinfection performance.
