Towards new and improved techniques in liquid biopsy for the diagnosis of diseases, this study reports experimental evidence of a rapid and reliable method based on terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopic ellipsometry (TDSE) for the early diagnosis of kidney-related diseases, using the detection of uric acid (UA) content in urine. Employing a custom-built THz-TDSE system, we analyzed the absorption and dispersion response of synthetic urine samples with varying concentrations of UA. The technique provides a prompt indication of UA presence and concentration, thanks to the sensitivity of THz waves to intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding.

The COVID-19 pandemic elucidated the importance of infection prevention and control (IPC) in residential aged care homes (RACHs), both on the health and wellbeing of its residents, and the staff and clinicians who care for them. While considerable efforts have been made in Australia to improve IPC both during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these resources remain reliant on evidence originating from hospitals and acute healthcare settings. This research aims to establish the core minimum components that will populate standards for IPC programs and governance (Stream A) and for professional practice and competencies (Stream B) in RACHs.

Eculizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting complement C5, is the first approved drug for complement-mediated diseases and indicated to treat paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. The introduction of eculizumab has improved the prognosis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome to near-normal life expectancy and quality of life. Administration of eculizumab resulted in a rapid and sustained reduction in hemolytic activity and a consequent risk of thrombosis in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and thrombotic microangiopathy in atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, respectively.
