The continuous rise in global demand for wood products has led to an increase in prices and a surge in research into alternative resources. As a byproduct of the timber industry, bark has emerged as a promising supplement in particleboard (PB) production. However, its anatomical structure, the presence of extractives, and its inferior mechanical properties complicate the production process, which have not yet been fully overcome at a commercial scale.

Among the main benefits of powder-based materials is the possibility of combining different constituents to achieve enhanced properties of the fabricated bulk material. The presented study characterizes the micro- and sub-structures and related mechanical properties of ferritic steel strengthened with a fine dispersion of nano-sized YO oxide particles. Unlike the typical method of preparation via rolling, the material presented herein was fabricated by direct consolidation from a mixture of powders using the versatile method of hot rotary swaging.

Introduction: The correlation between body mass index (BMI) and utility in participants with obesity was assessed using health-related quality-of-life data collected in two weight loss intervention studies, SCALE and STEP 1.

Methods: Short Form Health Survey 36-Item (SF-36) scores from SCALE and STEP 1 were mapped to EuroQoL-5 dimensions-3 levels (EQ-5D-3L) using an established algorithm to derive utilities for the UK. SF-36 scores from STEP 1 were converted into Short Form 6 dimension (SF-6D) utilities for Portugal using the tool developed by the University of Sheffield.

Many viruses initiate their cell-entry by binding their multisubunit receptors to human heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG) and other molecular components present on cellular membranes. These viral interactions could be blocked and the whole viruses could be eliminated by suitable HSPG-mimetics providing multivalent binding to viral protein receptors. Here, large sulfoglycodendron HSPG-mimetics of different topologies, structures, and sizes were designed to this purpose.
