Freeze-drying is a dehydration method that extends the shelf life and stability of drugs, vaccines, and biologics. Recently, its role has expanded beyond preservation to improve novel pharmaceuticals and their carriers, such as hydrogels, which are widely studied for both drug delivery and wound healing. The main aim of this study was to explore the multifunctional role of freeze-drying in improving the physicochemical properties of sodium alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based hydrogels for medical applications.

In this study, we present a nanocomposite hydrogel designed for skin motion sensing. The hydrogel is based on poly(acrylamide) crosslinked with gold nanoparticles covalently bound to the polymer matrix, yielding a robust, highly elastic and conductive material. The choice of amino acid derivative - N,N'-diacryloylcystine salt (BISS) - as a crosslinker allows for the introduction of gold nanoparticles, due to the presence of sulfide groups in its structure.

While Arabidopsis studies have shed light on the role of the primary root in root system development, the structure of root systems in trees is considerably more intricate, posing challenges to comprehend taproot growth in acorn-sown and nursery-cultivated seedlings. In this study, we investigated Quercus robur seedlings using rhizotrons, containers, and transplanted containers to rhizotrons, aiming to unravel the impact of forest nursery practices on processes governing taproot growth and root system development.

Thermoresponsive gels based on -isopropylacrylamide functionalized with amino groups were modified with gallic acid, with gallate (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic) groups being introduced into the polymer network. We investigated how the properties of these gels were affected at varying pH, by the formation of complexes between the polymer network of the gels and Fe ions (which form stable complexes with gallic acid, exhibiting 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 stoichiometry, depending on pH). The formation of complexes with varying stoichiometry within the gel was confirmed using UV-Vis spectroscopy, and the influence of such complexes on swelling behavior and volume phase transition temperature were investigated.

The novel, automated, multi-pumping flow system (MPFS) for online calibration and determination of nitrate in surface water is presented for the first time. The system was equipped with micropumps of three different nominal volumes (10, 20, and 50 µL). As a result, it was possible to prepare from one standard, directly in a flow system, up to seven standard solutions.
