Background: Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with its various manipulations could create a dangerous, sudden haemostatic response. This study was performed to investigate PTCA-induced periprocedural changes in platelet activation and its consequences.

Methods: Twenty-five consecutive patients admitted for elective PTCA were preclassified as having or not having circulating activated platelets.

Background: We wished to investigate whether platelet activation is related to the clinical outcome during the 24 hours immediately after elective percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA).

Methods And Results: In 102 patients with high-grade coronary stenosis admitted for elective PTCA, preprocedural platelet activation was characterized by flow cytometric measurement of the proteins CD62, CD63, and thrombospondin expressed on the platelet surface membrane. The prevalence of acute ischemic events during the 24 hours immediately after the procedure was then related to the pre-PTCA platelet activation status.

A total of 108 patients with diabetes, type II were studied--68 males and 40 females, with an average age of 63 years for the males and 67 years for the females, with various duration--from freshly diagnosed to over 20 years. A positive correlation was established between the serum HbA1 level and blood sugar before meals, its maximum elevation within 24 h and the evaluation of the stage of decompensation of carbohydrate metabolism. Glycemia and HbA1 are not interchangeable but reciprocally complemented indices for diabetes control, for that subjected to follow up care in particular.

The effect of pentoxiphyline substance--Trental, production of Höchst, was studied in 37 diabetics (12 females and 25 males) aged from 36 to 78. Besides according to clinical manifestations, the therapeutic effect was objectivized in dynamics through the oscillography "Gesenius-Keller", double-rheography "Schufrid", skin thermometer--Tastotherm P 60 "Braun" and 6-canal ECG apparatus "Hellige". Favourable results, evaluated according to all mentioned methods were found in 89.

Excretion of 17-KS and 17-OCS was studied in the urine of 86 patients with various cytogenetic variants of gonad dysgenesis of a female phenotype under basic conditions and after ACTH stimulation; in 10 patients endogenous hypophyseal ACTH reserve after block of the adrenal cortex by metopyrone was investigated as well. A conclusion was drawn on the presence in these patients of differnet types of deviations of the adrenal gland function. In some of the cases there is a primary "global" or dissociated injury of the adrenal cortex, apparently directly associated with gonosome anomaly; in other cases--with disturbed regulation of ACTH secretion.
