Cognitive impairment and the associated factors among women with a history of pregnancy complications in rural southwestern Uganda.

Background: Worldwide, there is a growing concern about the rising number of people with declining cognitive functioning. However, findings on this phenomenon are inconclusive. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence of cognitive impairment and the associated factors in women with a history of pregnancy complications in rural southwestern Uganda.

Computer-assisted assessment of hyoid bone motion from videofluoroscopic swallow studies.

Videofluoroscopic examination of swallowing remains the standard for evaluation of patients with swallowing complaints. Although attempts have been made to objectify aspects of the study, findings from the study are largely subjective and reliant on clinician training and judgment leading to considerable inter-rater variability. We describe a computerized image analysis program designed to objectify one component of the swallow study, the movement of the hyoid bone.

Diaper dermatitis: differential diagnosis and management.

Diaper dermatitis is one of the most common dermatoses occurring in infancy. It is an irritant dermatitis, in which a variety of factors act in concert to produce inflammation of the diapered skin. The differential diagnosis includes many common and some uncommon conditions.

Disseminated sporotrichosis.

The clinical manifestations of sporotrichosis can be classified into three disease patterns: (1) localized lymphatic sporotrichosis, (2) fixed cutaneous (or endemic) sporotrichosis, and (3) disseminated sporotrichosis. This presentation reflects a rare disseminated form of the disease with extensive cutaneous and systemic lesions, and further illustrates the difficulty in diagnosing systemic sporotrichosis infection.

Atypical Kyrle's disease.

Atypical Kyrle's disease developed on the limbs and on the palmar and plantar surfaces of an African man. Unusual histopathologic features, such as degenerating cells under the parakeratotic plug and eccrine duct in the parakeratotic plug, are described and the diagnostic criteria for Kyrle's disease are reviewed.
