[EARLY IN-HOSPITAL MORTALITY IN INTERNAL MEDICINE WARDS (WITHIN 24 HOURS): A POTENTIAL QUALITY INDICATOR OR A VARIABLE AFFECTED BY MULTIPLE FACTORS?].

Aims: To evaluate in-hospital mortality rate within 24 hours in internal medicine wards and to evaluate if it may be used as quality indicator.

Background: In-hospital mortality rate is an outcome measure which apparently reflects quality of care. There are debates on whether it may be considered a quality indicator since it is difficult to compare different case-mixes between hospitals.

Evaluation of a single intra-articular injection of autologous protein solution for treatment of osteoarthritis in horses.

Objective: To evaluate intra-articular autologous protein solution (APS) for the treatment of osteoarthritis in horses. Animals-40 client-owned horses with naturally occuring osteoarthritis.

Procedures: APS was generated from a dual-device system that concentrated plasma and WBC proteins and enriched platelet growth factors.

[Acantholytic rosacea of the forehead and scalp in a patient with Hailey-Hailey disease].

Background: Rosacea is a common dermatosis that can involve the bald area of the scalp. We report the case of a man presenting clinical symptoms of rosacea of the forehead and the scalp, but with a histological picture of familial chronic benign pemphigus.

Patients And Methods: A 47-year-old man with a history of Hailey-Hailey disease had been presenting facial dermatosis for 5 years.

In vivo toxicity evaluation of gold-dendrimer composite nanodevices with different surface charges.

Composite nanodevices (CNDs) are multifunctional nanomaterials with potential uses in cancer imaging and therapy. Poly(amidoamine) dendrimer-based composite nanodevices are important members of this group and consist of an organic dendrimer component and an incorporated inorganic component, in this case, gold. This study addresses the short- (14 days) and long-term (78 days) in vivo toxicity of generation-5 (G5; 5 nm) PAMAM dendrimer-based gold-CNDs (Au-CNDs) with varying surface charges (positive, negative and neutral) in C57BL/6J male mice.
