We describe a transportable distance measurement system based on synthetic wavelength interferometry. Two frequency-doubled Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet lasers at 532 nm are used to generate a synthetic wavelength of approximately 2.5 cm.

Step by step displacements with a step value of 5 nm are presented. A repeatability of 0.

The principle of this refractometer is based on frequency measurements between optical laser sources. It permits quasi-instantaneous measurement with a resolution of better than 10(-9) and uncertainty in the 10(-8) range.

The first stage of this experiment consists in a static equilibrium, by means of a mechanical beam balance, between a gravitational force (a weight of an artefact having a known mass submitted to the acceleration due to the gravity) and a vertical electromagnetic force acting on a coil driven by a current subject to the magnetic induction field provided by a permanent magnet. The principle of the force comparison in the French experiment is explained.

This system provides more output power than systems with an intracavity unidirectional device. To the best of our knowledge, this work marks the first demonstration of a unidirectional planar ring laser at 1.
