Article Synopsis
  • - New Zealand's drug market is distinctive, particularly among gay and bisexual men (GBM), yet there's limited research on how drug use impacts sexual behavior, especially with biomedical HIV prevention.
  • - A study involving 739 GBM identified three groups based on sexual practices: those not recently sexually active, those who were, and those who used drugs during sex, revealing that sexualized drug use is notably common.
  • - Results show that sexualized drug users are typically more connected to the gay community, frequently test for HIV, and often use preventive measures like PrEP, indicating a need for targeted prevention strategies for those with less intense sexual behaviors.

Article Synopsis
  • Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are common infections in New Zealand, and certain groups, like younger people and Māori and Pacific peoples, get them more often.
  • Researchers looked at data from 2019 to find out who is more likely to get reinfected with these STIs within a year of their first infection.
  • The study found that younger people, those living in specific regions, and certain ethnic groups are at higher risk, and suggested that these groups need better healthcare services to help prevent reinfection.

This study was performed to validate a dried blood spot (DBS) method for the serological screening of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C. It included 250 paired DBS and serum samples and 116 unpaired DBS samples from 366 unique patients from two laboratories between 8 October and 2 November 2021. As determined by original test request, these were tested using a DBS method for HIV Ag/Ab (n=216), anti-treponemal Ab (n=166), hepatitis B sAg (n=100), and hepatitis C Ab (n=100) Elecsys assays on the Roche Cobas automated platform.

The advent of e-cigarettes as a commercial product in Aotearoa New Zealand has been accompanied by aggressive marketing and a sharp uptake in use, especially among young people. Recent evidence suggests that e-cigarettes are widely used for purposes other than smoking cessation.
