Duplication of the dura as a cause of anterior thoracic spinal cord herniation. A case report.

The authors report the surgical management of anterior thoracic spinal cord herniation through a defect of the inner layer of a duplicated dura mater in a 55-year-old patient presenting with a 5-year history of progressive myelopathy, addressing the possible pathogenesis and the surgical treatment options of this rare entity.

Subdural effusions with hydrocephalus after severe head injury: successful treatment with ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement: report of 3 adult cases.

Background. Subdural collections of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with associated hydrocephalus have been described by several different and sometimes inaccurate terms. It has been proposed that a subdural effusion with hydrocephalus (SDEH) can be treated effectively with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (V-P shunt).

Swordfish bill injury involving abdomen and vertebral column: case report and review.

Background: Penetrating injuries of the abdomen and spinal canal that involve organic material of animal origin are extremely rare and derive from domestic and wild animal attacks or fish attacks.

Case Presentation: In this case report we present the unique, as far as the literature is concerned, unprovoked woman's injury to the abdomen by a swordfish. There are only four cases of swordfish attacks on humans in the literature - one resulted to thoracic trauma, two to head trauma and one to knee trauma, one of which was fatal - none of which were unprovoked.

Post-surgical meningitis due to multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Effective treatment with intravenous and/or intraventricular colistin and therapeutic dilemmas.

Post-surgical meningitis and/or ventriculitis caused by Gram-negative bacteria may be difficult to treat due to the emergence of multiresistant strains. Two patients with multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii central nervous system infection, successfully treated with either intravenous and/or intraventricular colistin are presented. Unresolved issues such as dose and duration of intraventricular colistin are discussed.
