Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and other progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease have limited treatment options. Fibroblasts are key effector cells that sense matrix stiffness through conformation changes in mechanically sensitive receptors, leading to activation of downstream profibrotic pathways. Here we investigate the role of Piezo2, a mechanosensitive ion channel, in human and mouse lung fibrosis, and its function in myofibroblast differentiation in primary human lung fibroblasts (HLFs).

Article Synopsis
  • LRP6 is a receptor for Wnt ligands that plays a significant role in tissue fibrosis by affecting myofibroblast function and ECM production.
  • Dickkopf1 (DKK1), a Wnt antagonist, was found to increase gene expressions linked to inflammation and fibrosis in lung fibroblasts.
  • Genetic deletion of LRP6 in myofibroblasts prevented lung inflammation and fibrosis caused by bleomycin, indicating LRP6's critical role in managing inflammation and fibrotic responses in lung injuries.

Transition from education to the workforce has been recognised as difficult and linked to 'reality shock.' Due to the unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, many student nurses opted in for NHS emergency placements and prematurely transitioned to the workplace, which calls for an in-depth investigation of the work readiness and transition experiences of this cohort. The aim of this study was to investigate self-perceived work readiness, the effectiveness of support provided by the universities and the NHS as well as explore the experiences of student nurses who responded to the COVID-19 crisis to understand the impact of this early transition to the clinical workforce.

The Scottish verdict system includes three verdicts: 'guilty', 'not guilty' and 'not proven'. Politicians propose that the three-verdict system is partially to blame for the low conviction rate of rape, whereas research suggests that rape myths may be having a larger impact. To test the effects of varying verdict systems (guilty, not guilty and not proven; guilty and not guilty; a series of proven and not proven verdicts) and rape myths on juror verdicts.
