1. Differing amounts of human pepsins 1, 3 (pepsin A) and 5 (pepsin C or gastriscin) in aqueous HCl/NaCl at pH 1.3 were placed in Perspex rings on the exposed luminal surface of the perfused cat stomach to test for mucolytic and erosive activity in vivo, with the acid medium in control rings.

Sulfasalazine appears to exert its beneficial effect in colitis by releasing 5-aminosalicylic acid in the colon, but its use can be limited by side effects. Ipsalazide and balsalazide are novel sulfasalazine analogs designed to release 5-aminosalicylic acid and a nontoxic carrier molecule in the gastrointestinal tract. They have a low oral toxicity following single or repeat administration to mouse, rat, and ferret, and balsalazide is not mutagenic in the Ames test.

Imipramine was specifically deuterated in either both aromatic rings or in the N-methyl group, or in both positions, and the pharmacokinetic properties of the products were determined in the rat and compared with those of the non-deuterated analogue. Deuteration of imipramine resulted in a small but significant isotope effect on N-demethylation while aromatic hydroxylation was unaffected. This isotope effect led to a slower rate of systemic clearance, a longer half-life and, when orally administered, enhanced bioavailability.

Comprehensive studies on the haematology, urine chemistry, serum chemistry and gross pathology have been carried out and reported. Seasonal weight changes were confirmed and were initiated, together with sexual activity, when ferrets were brought in to a constant temperature (18-19 degrees C) and 14-hour daylight cycle during the winter months. Levels of haemoglobin, erythrocytes and haematocrit were higher than in most common laboratory species.
