In conservation strategies, getting precise and repeatable information on the species' diet and health without relying on invasive or laborious methods is challenging. Here, we developed an efficient and non-invasive workflow for the sequencing and analysis of four taxonomic markers from fecal DNA to characterize the gut microbiota, parasites, and plants and lichens composing the winter diet of caribou (Rangifer tarandus), Canada's most iconic endangered species. Sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene of eukaryotes from seven locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada, allowed for the detection of five genera of parasites in caribou feces (including Nematodirella and Parelaphostrongylus) with variable frequency of occurrence depending on sampling location and sex.

Objective: There are varying anatomical and mechanical demands of stent placement in the iliofemoral venous segment; the Duo Venous Stent System is designed to address these issues. The purpose of the VIVID (Venous stent for the Iliofemoral Vein Investigational clinical trial using the Duo Venous Stent System) study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of the Duo Venous Stent System for the treatment of patients with nonmalignant iliofemoral venous obstructive disease.

Methods: This was an international, prospective, multicenter, single-arm study that enrolled patients with symptomatic nonthrombotic (NT), post-thrombotic (PTS), or acute deep vein thrombotic (aDVT) iliofemoral venous outflow obstruction.

A nonthrombotic iliac vein lesion is defined as the extrinsic compression of the iliac vein. Symptoms of lower extremity chronic venous insufficiency or pelvic venous disease can develop secondary to nonthrombotic iliac vein lesion. Anatomic compression has been observed in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

Purpose: To report 3-year outcomes from a prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized, single-arm study designed to assess the safety and effectiveness of the Zilver Vena Venous Stent for the treatment of symptomatic iliofemoral venous outflow obstruction.

Materials And Methods: The VIVO study included patients with symptomatic obstruction of 1 iliofemoral venous segment (ie, 1 limb), characterized by a Clinical, Etiological, Anatomic, Pathophysiology (CEAP) clinical classification of ≥3 or a Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) for pain of ≥2. Patients were retrospectively grouped based on baseline clinical presentation as postthrombotic syndrome (PTS), nonthrombotic iliac vein (NIVL) obstruction, or acute deep vein thrombosis (aDVT).

Soil sampling for environmental DNA in remote and semi-remote locations is often limited due to logistical constraints surrounding sample preservation, including no or limited access to a freezer. Freezing at - 20 °C is a common DNA preservation strategy, however, other methods such as desiccation, ethanol or commercial preservatives are available as potential alternative DNA preservation methods for room temperature storage. In this study, we assessed five preservation methods (CD1 solution, 95% Ethanol, Dry & Dry silica gel packs, RNAlater, LifeGuard) along with freezing at - 20 °C, against immediate extraction on organic and mineral soils for up to three weeks of preservation.
