Context: The 2022 United States mpox outbreak disproportionately affected racial and ethnic minority gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

Program: We utilized surveillance data and vaccination registries to determine whether populations most impacted by mpox in Alameda County received JYNNEOS vaccines and tecovirimat (TPOXX) during June 1-October 31, 2022.

Implementation: Alameda County Public Health Department responded to the mpox epidemic through partnerships with local health care providers who serve communities disproportionately affected by mpox.

In the United States, Spanish-speaking patients with diabetes often receive inadequate dietary counseling. Providing language and culture-concordant dietary counseling on an ongoing basis is critical to diabetes self-care. To determine if automated telephone nutrition support (ATNS) counseling could help patients improve glycemic control by duplicating a successful pilot in Mexico in a Spanish-speaking population in Oakland, California.

Drug hypersensitivity reactions are often observed by clinicians treating patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). For certain drugs, the incidence of these reactions appears to be higher than previously reported in the general population. The best example is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, associated with rash, fever, hematologic disturbances, transaminase elevation, and, less frequently, more severe reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and anaphylactic-like reactions.

The screening of blood donors for the detection of dangerous disease carriers is a mandatory requirement for blood transfusion centers. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is a suitable method for the examination of large populations. We describe a sandwich EIA allowing the detection of soluble malarial antigens in plasma using 11 mouse monoclonal antibodies.

In 1978 a campaign of vaccination against tetanus was conducted in a savannah biotope of Burkina Faso (Garango). The effects of 1 or 2 tetanus toxoid injections and of concomitant malnutrition and malaria infection were assessed by measurements of specific antibody and cell-mediated responses. None of these 2 variables did interfere with the development of anti-tetanus immunity.
