Stroke Prevention in Hispanic Children with Sickle Cell Anemia: the SACRED trial.

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is recognized globally, but little is known about affected Hispanic populations. In partnership with Dominican Republic, a Hispanic Caribbean Island with a large SCA population, a TCD screening program provided hydroxyurea to children with conditional velocities. Building local capacity, ten Dominican medical graduates were certified in TCD examinations and trained in hydroxyurea management.

Structural inequality linked to brain volume and network dynamics in aging and dementia across the Americas.

Structural inequality, the uneven distribution of resources and opportunities, influences health outcomes. However, the biological embedding of structural inequality in aging and dementia, especially among underrepresented populations, is unclear. We examined the association between structural inequality (country-level and state-level Gini indices) and brain volume and connectivity in 2,135 healthy controls, and individuals with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobe degeneration from Latin America and the United States.

Two new species and a new record of Hypoxylaceae (Xylariales, Ascomycota) from Mexico.

The family Hypoxylaceae has a cosmopolitan distribution with greater diversity in tropical regions, its growth habit is saprotrophic, endophytic and potentially phytopathogenic. From the revision of herbarium specimens and field collections from the Yucatan Peninsula, two new species were described: , characterized by having fusiform spores and which is distinguished by having stromata vinaceous and dark brown KOH-extractable pigments. The species are described based on morphological characters and Bayesian Inference analyses of four molecular markers (ITS, LSU, RPB2 and TUB2).

Application of Natural Zeolite as Catalyst in the Degradation of the Azo Dye DO39 by Plasma.

The discharge of industrial wastewater with dyes into natural tributaries has serious environmental consequences on aquatic ecosystems and the health of living beings. Atmospheric plasmas have proven to be very useful for the degradation of organic contaminants in water; in this context, corona type discharge, owing to its physical characteristics, is capable of degrading and even mineralizing dyes dissolved in water. In this work, zeolite was used as a catalyst in the degradation of the textile azo dye Direct Orange 39 (DO39) through interaction with plasma generated at atmospheric pressure.

Codesigning training for health providers to improve detection and response to elder abuse.

Background And Objectives: Screening for elder abuse can improve detection, but many health providers lack the necessary skills and confidence. To address this, training for health providers on elder abuse screening was co-designed as part of a trial aimed at improving elder abuse detection and response.

Research Design And Methods: Between March and April 2023, 7 health providers and 10 older people and family carers participated in two national Australian online codesign workshops.
