Turner syndrome in Albania and the efficacy of its treatment with growth hormone.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of Turner syndrome inside the Albanian population, its clinical, cytological and genetic characteristics, the accompanying pathologies, and the efficacy of the treatment with the growth hormone. We performed a retrospective analysis of 59 patients suffering from this syndrome (aging from 5 to 23 years old). The diagnosis of female patients suffering from Turner syndrome is delayed, with a mean age at the moment of diagnosis of 13.

Graves' disease in Albanian children.

Background: Graves' disease (GD) accounts for 10-15% of thyroid disorders in patients less than 18 years of age. It is the most common cause of thyrotoxicosis in children and accounts for at least 95% of cases in children. Pediatric Treatment of Graves' disease consists of anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodide and thyroidectomy but the optimal treatment of GD in children is still controversial.

Final Height in Children with Idiopathic Growth Hormone Deficiency treated with Growth Hormone: Albanian experience.

Objective- To evaluate the efficiency of recombinant growth hormone for increasing adult height in children treated for idiopathic growth hormone deficiency and to evaluate the prognostic factor for height at the end of treatment. Design- Observational follow up study. Setting- Population based registry.

A maxi-chloride channel in the inner membrane of mammalian mitochondria.

Patch-clamp experiments on swollen mitochondria of human, mouse and rat origins have revealed activity by an approximately 400 pS (in 150 mM KCl), voltage-dependent and anion-selective channel. This channel is located in the inner membrane, as shown by experiments with mitochondria from cells expressing a fluorescent mitochondrial tag protein and by the co-presence of the 107 pS channel and of the permeability transition pore (PTP). The frequency of appearance was inversely related to the presence of the PTP.

Cytokine network in rectal mucosa in perianal Crohn's disease: relations with inflammatory parameters and need for surgery.

Background: Nowadays anti-TNF-alpha antibodies are used for the treatment of perianal Crohn's disease (CD). Nevertheless, this treatment is effective in only a part of these patients and recent studies suggested a role for other cytokines in chronic bowel inflammation. The aim of this study was to assess the cytokine profile in the rectal mucosa of patients affected by perianal CD and to understand its relations with the systemic cytokine profile and inflammatory parameters and the need for surgery.
