The luminescence properties of green Ba4Si6O16:Eu2+, rare-earths (RE) (RE = Sc, Y, La and Lu except Pm) phosphors are reported. Their long-lasting phosphorescence is discussed in view of trap depths and concentrations determined from thermally stimulated luminescence experiments. A second emission band centered at 439 nm was evidenced at low temperatures, which stems from the substitution of Eu2+ in the two non-equivalent Ba2+ sites of Ba4Si6O16.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA glass containing mechanoluminescent crystalline particles behaves as a photonic sponge: that is to say it fills up with trapped electrons when exposed to UV light, and it emits light when submitted to a mechanical loading, similar to a sponge soaked with water that is wringed under mechanical action! A major finding of the present study is that the elasto-mechanoluminescence effect showing up on unloading is governed by the deviatoric part of the applied stress (no effect under hydrostatic pressure). Furthermore, the structural source for this phenomenon was elucidated by a detailed density functional theory analysis of the e energetics at the possible oxygen vacancy sites within the crystalline phase. Both the e trapping and detrapping processes under load could be explained.

This unusual optical activity is linked to the intramolecular chiral conformation of the glucose molecules at the air/liquid interface. Choosing sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) as a model surfactant and glucose as model sugar, favorable interactions between the anionic group -OSO3(-)- and the glucose molecules are highlighted.

This new method, consisting in molding the glass in a silica cast made of capillaries and capillary guides, allows the development of various designs of fibers, such as suspended core, large core or small core MOFs. After removing the cast in a hydrofluoric acid bath, the preform is drawn and the design is controlled using a system applying differential pressure in the holes.
