Scaling down the dimensions of thermoacoustic sound sources (thermophones) improves efficiency by means of reducing speaker heat capacity. Recent experiments with nanoscale thermophones have revealed properties which are not fully understood theoretically. We develop a Green's function formalism which quantitatively explains some observed discrepancies, e.

Water-based stable inks of functionalized SWNTs (carboxylic acid, amide, poly(ethylene glycol), and polyaminobenzene sulfonic acid) were prepared and applied to inkjet deposit microscopic patterns of nanotube films on lithographically defined silicon chips with a back-side gate arrangement. Source-drain transfer characteristics and gate-effect measurements confirm the important role of the chemical functional groups in the electrical behavior of carbon nanotube networks.

Species composition of micromycete complexes colonizing aspen, birch, and pine wood was studied. Calculation of the Sorens-Tchekanovsky similarity coefficients showed that these complexes shared a high degree of similarity. They were dominated by the representatives of the genera Penicillium, Paecilomyces, Trichoderma, and Rhizopus.

Bacillus sp. X-b, a biocontrol agent against certain plant pathogenic fungi, secretes a complex of hydrolytic enzymes, composed of chitinase, chitosanase, laminarinase, lipase and protease. Homogenized mycelium of basidiomycete Macrolepiota procera induced activities of these enzymes more effectively than colloidal chitin or partially purified cell walls of another basidiomycete Polyporus squamosus.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new method to represent and evaluate crackles on the flow-volume plane is described. Characteristic crackle patterns were found in patients with pneumonia, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure and cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis. In addition to visual assessment, simple statistical parameters were used to describe the observed pathological phenomena.
