Reconstruction of three-dimensional images is performed either by scanner-based systems or by independent computers. The advantages of a stand-alone system include compatibility with multiple imaging modalities, more advanced technology, and increased user interaction. This report illustrates the use of a stand-alone system for the less commonly utilized purpose of three-dimensional reconstruction of abdominal soft tissues.

We present a patient with unilateral progressive painless loss of vision leading to optic atrophy and blindness. High-resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated adipose tissue extending from the anterior portion of an enlarged optic canal posteriorly to involve the ipsilateral optic chiasm. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an intracanalicular lipoma.

Quantitative measurements of the epidural space between T-7 and L-4 were made in the sagittal and coronal planes utilizing x-ray films made after the injection of iodized oil into the epidural space in the low thoracic and upper lumbar areas. These data reveal a 1-mm ventral epidural space and a 2-mm lateral epidural space, with a sawtooth shape to the dorsal epidural space measuring between 1.1 and 2.

The CT scan and the metrizamide myelogram are compared in evaluating multiple disorders of the spine. Examples are shown of degenerative disc disease, including lateral discs, isodense discs, and degenerative changes, which cause varying degrees of stenosis of the spinal canal and neuroforamina. Examples of discitis and neoplastic involvement of the vertebral bodies and spinal canal are also shown.
