Phenyllactic acid (PLA), is a naturally produced, broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound with activity against bacteria and fungi. PLA can be produced by a variety of lactic acid bacteria, including vaginal species, which are healthy constituents of the vaginal microbiome with a protective role against invading pathogenic bacteria and/or fungi. Additionally, PLA has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, overall indicating its therapeutic potential as an intravaginally delivered compound for modulation of the vaginal microbiome.

Cancers likely originate in progenitor zones containing stem cells and perivascular stromal cells. Much evidence suggests stromal cells play a central role in tumor initiation and progression. Brain perivascular cells (pericytes) are contractile and function normally to regulate vessel tone and morphology, have stem cell properties, are interconvertible with macrophages and are involved in new vessel formation during angiogenesis.

Previous studies suggest that Fgf8 has a key role in regulating vertebrate development. In the rostral head of the embryonic chicken, there are increasing numbers of separate Fgf8 domains; these are present in tissues that appear to have previously expressed Otx2. As Fgf8 expression becomes established, Otx2 expression weakens, but remains in cells abutting the Fgf8 expression domain.

Beads containing recombinant FGF8 (FGF8-beads) were implanted in the prospective caudal diencephalon or midbrain of chick embryos at stages 9-12. This induced the neuroepithelium rostral and caudal to the FGF8-bead to form two ectopic, mirror-image midbrains. Furthermore, cells in direct contact with the bead formed an outgrowth that protruded laterally from the neural tube.
