Introduction: A demand from the cardiac surgery and heart transplantation department of a French (Lyon) university hospital to adopt an ex-vivo perfusion system of human donor hearts was a chance to actively involve patients in our hospital-based health technology assessment (HB-HTA) process.

Material And Methods: We selected an existing framework for patient involvement in HB-HTA and involved patients at two stages of the HB-HTA process: evaluation and dissemination. Firstly, we conducted a consultation-oriented workshop to gather patient perspectives on the introduction of the technology in our hospital, based on their significant experience of healthcare.

Poultry feed is often contaminated with fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone, which can result in oxidative damage, inflammation and change in lipid metabolism. Although sphingolipids play key roles in cells, only the effects of fumonisins on the sphingolipidome are well-documented. In chickens, fumonisins have been shown to increase the sphinganine to sphingosine ratio and the C22-24:C16 sphingolipid ratio, which has been proposed as a new biomarker of toxicity.

Introduction: The development of oral anticancer agents (OAA) has profoundly changed cancer care, leading patients to manage their chemotherapy treatment on an outpatient basis. The prevention of iatrogenic effects of OAA remains a major concern, especially since their side effects are not less serious than those of intravenous chemotherapy. The ONCORAL programme was set up to secure the management of OAA in cancer patients followed at the Lyon University Hospital.

The biological properties of sphinganine-(d18:0)-, sphingosine-(d18:1)-, deoxysphinganine-(m18: 0)-, deoxysphingosine-(m18:1)-, deoxymethylsphinganine-(m17:0)-, deoxymethylsphingosine-(m17:1)-, sphingadienine-(d18:2)-, and phytosphingosine-(t18:0)-sphingolipids have been reported to vary, but little is known about the effects of fumonisins, which are mycotoxins that inhibit ceramide synthase, on sphingolipids other than those containing d18:0 and d18:1. Thirty chickens divided into three groups received a control diet or a diet containing 14.6 mg FB1 + FB2/kg for 14 and 21 days.

Article Synopsis
  • The RESECT study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) compared to conventional white-light microsurgery for glioblastoma resection in a randomized trial across 21 French neurosurgical centers.
  • The study involved 171 patients, with those receiving 5-ALA showing a significantly higher rate of gross-total resection (GTR) at 79.1% compared to 47.8% in the placebo group.
  • Despite differences in surgical success, both groups reported similar postoperative performance scores, indicating that while 5-ALA improved resection rates, it did not significantly affect overall recovery in terms of the Karnof
