Volitional movement requires descending input from the motor cortex and sensory feedback through the spinal cord. We previously developed a paired brain and spinal electrical stimulation approach in rats that relies on convergence of the descending motor and spinal sensory stimuli in the cervical cord. This approach strengthened sensorimotor circuits and improved volitional movement through associative plasticity.

The presence of large protein inclusions is a hallmark of neurodegeneration, and yet the precise molecular factors that contribute to their formation remain poorly understood. Screens using aggregation-prone proteins have commonly relied on downstream toxicity as a readout rather than the direct formation of aggregates. Here, we combined a genome-wide CRISPR knockout screen with Pulse Shape Analysis, a FACS-based method for inclusion detection, to identify direct modifiers of TDP-43 aggregation in human cells.

Bridging the digital health divide-patient experiences with mobile integrated health and facilitated telehealth by community-level indicators of health disparity.

Objective: Evaluate the impact of community tele-paramedicine (CTP) on patient experience and satisfaction relative to community-level indicators of health disparity.

Materials And Methods: This mixed-methods study evaluates patient-reported satisfaction and experience with CTP, a facilitated telehealth program combining in-home paramedic visits with video visits by emergency physicians. Anonymous post-CTP visit survey responses and themes derived from directed content analysis of in-depth interviews from participants of a randomized clinical trial of mobile integrated health and telehealth were stratified into high, moderate, and low health disparity Community Health Districts (CHD) according to the 2018 New York City (NYC) Community Health Survey.

Spinal Epidural Abscess and Strep Pharyngitis.

Spinal epidural abscesses (SEA) require prompt diagnosis to avoid devastating consequences. Here, we discuss the case of a healthy 20-year-old college student-with a recent diagnosis of strep pharyngitis-who presented with neck pain, fever, and a neurologic deficit-the most common symptoms of SEA. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a T1-postcontrast, peripherally enhancing epidural collection from C3-T5 with associated cord compression and T3 osteomyelitis.

The Utility of a Virtual Emergency Medicine Elective for Visiting Medical Students.

Background Away rotations allow emergency medicine (EM)-bound fourth-year medical students to experience a residency program's educational culture and influence the ranking of residency programs. The financial cost and geographic distance have limited student participation in away electives. In recent years, COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions on away rotations resulted in the creation of multiple virtual courses.
