Introduction: Renal colic is generally considered a diagnosis appropriate for discharge home once pain is adequately controlled and no other admission criteria are met. The increasing prevalence of ED observation units (EDOU) represent another disposition option for patients with renal colic. In this study, we sought to describe the rates of 14-day revisits for renal colic among patients placed in an EDOU as compared to those discharged from the ED.

Article Synopsis
  • Thiotaurine is a compound derived from cystine and affects metabolic processes by forming hydrogen sulfide, a signaling molecule involved in inflammation.
  • Research shows that thiotaurine inhibits the activation of human neutrophils and influences protein expression, particularly reducing levels of the enzyme GAPDH in activated cells.
  • These findings suggest that thiotaurine plays a significant role in regulating inflammatory responses and may modulate neutrophil activation through the modification of target proteins.

Although prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission by antiretroviral drugs has been shown to be effective, the short- and long-term effects of treatment are not well known. Several reports suggest that antiretroviral drugs act not only by inhibiting viral replication, but also by improving antiviral immunity. In particular, treatment with nucleoside analogs was found to increase CD40 ligand (CD40L; CD154) levels, an inducible molecule expressed on activated T lymphocytes.

The recently-identified Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein gene (WASP) is responsible for the Wiskott-Aldrich X-linked immunodeficiency as well as for isolated X-linked thrombocytopenia (XLT). To characterize the regulatory sequences of the WASP gene, we have isolated, sequenced and functionally analyzed a 1.6-Kb DNA fragment upstream of the WASP coding sequence.
