During a 10 day survey in the CelticSea near the Irish South-West coast (July 2007), Dinophysis acuta was observed in large numbers. The deployment of a profiler allowed for the identification of a D. acuta thin layer that reached 1910 cells/L.

Karenia mikimotoi is one of the most common red-tide dinoflagellates proliferating in the eastern North Atlantic and around Japan. Kills of marine fauna are associated with its blooms. In mixed water columns it migrates vertically, while in stratified water columns, the population remains confined within pycnocline layers.

The objectives of this study were 1) to study the genetic diversity of the Alexandrium, Dinophysis and Karenia genera along the French coasts in order to design probes targeting specific DNA regions, and 2) to apply PCR-based detection to detect these three toxic dinoflagellate genera in natural samples. Genetic diversity of these toxic taxa was first studied from either cultures or cells isolated from Lugol-fixed field samples. By this way, partial sequences of the large ribosomal subunit (LSU rDNA) including the variable domains D1 and D2 of A.

We present evidence for the toxic effects of fatty acid 18:5n3 (octadecapentaenoic acid) in the gills and intestine of the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. Light microscopic observation of gills showed strong mucus production and alteration of ionocytes. The Mg- and Na,K-ATPase activities were inhibited, with IC50 values of 10(-3) and 1.

Effects of octadecapentaenoic acid 18:5n3 and other related polyunsaturated fatty acids present in gymnodinium cf. mikimotoi were tested in isolated trout hepatocytes. These exotoxins decreased intracellular pH followed by a slow recovery to initial value and alkalinization of acidic compartments, suggesting an inhibition of vacuolar H(+)-ATPases.
