Objective: This study examined relationships between home smoking/vaping bans and caregiver restrictions on child access to tobacco in the home among rural, Black/African American caregivers who smoke.

Methods: Data were from the baseline survey of a randomized trial conducted in 2020-2022 among caregivers who smoke cigarettes and/or little cigars/cigarillos (N = 188). Logistic regressions examined associations between independent variables (tobacco product-specific and comprehensive home smoking/vaping bans) and dependent variables (caregiver keeps tobacco in the home; among caregivers with tobacco at home, caregiver restricts child tobacco access at home) Models were adjusted for caregiver tobacco use, income, and additional covariates based on stepwise selection.

Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at how the home environment affects Black/African American women caregivers who smoke in rural, low-resourced areas and their ability to quit.
  • It found that many caregivers live with family members who also smoke, which can make it harder for them to stop smoking themselves.
  • Caregivers with young family members who smoke in their homes were more likely to use helpful methods to quit compared to those without young smokers around.

Internet users are inundated with attempts to persuade, including digital nudges like defaults, friction, and reinforcement. When these nudges fail to be transparent, optional, and beneficial, they can become 'dark patterns', categorised here under the acronym FORCES (Frame, Obstruct, Ruse, Compel, Entangle, Seduce). Elsewhere, psychological principles like negativity bias, the curiosity gap, and fluency are exploited to make social content viral, while more covert tactics including astroturfing, meta-nudging, and inoculation are used to manufacture consensus.
