Galvanic current has been emerging as a novel therapy to regenerate chronic tissue lesions, including musculoskeletal and dermatological lesions. Recently, the NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-1β release have been identified as a signaling pathway triggered upon galvanic current application. However, the parameters for the clinical application of galvanic current remain subjective to the experience of the facultative in charge.

Aims: To compare the effectiveness of a combined treatment involving manual therapy and postural exercises in wind musicians with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD).

Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted among a sample of TMD-affected wind-instrument musician students (NCT05893251), who were assigned to an experimental group (EG) or a control group (CG). Both groups underwent an active cervical postural treatment for 4 weeks, with the experimental group (EG) additionally receiving a cervical therapy protocol.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammasomes are complex protein structures that help produce inflammation-related proteins IL-1β and IL-18, crucial in various diseases.
  • The study focuses on the NLRP3 inflammasome's role in tissue damage inflammation, particularly in a mouse model of tendinopathy caused by collagenase-induced degradation of the Achilles' tendon.
  • Findings show that while NLRP3 is essential for producing IL-1β, another inflammasome is necessary for IL-18 production, suggesting that targeting ASC could be a promising approach for treating tendinopathies.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can lead to severe and recurrent exacerbations, significantly impacting patient mortality and health outcomes.
  • A prognostic model, developed through a study of stable patients with moderate-to-severe COPD, successfully identifies individuals at risk for multiple severe exacerbations within three years.
  • The ESEx index, based on previous exacerbation history and physical performance metrics, showed strong predictive capacity, potentially guiding early interventions and encouraging patients to enhance their physical activity.
