Objective: To estimate population-wide hepatitis B and C seroprevalence using dried blood spot samples acquired for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) surveillance as part of the 2010-2011 Demographic and Health Survey in Burkina Faso.

Methods: We used the database acquired during the multistage, clustered, population-based survey, in which 15 377 participants completed questionnaires and provided dried blood spot samples for HIV testing. We extracted sociodemographic and geographic data including age, sex, ethnicity, education, wealth, marital status and region for each participant.

Article Synopsis
  • Subclinical mastitis (SCM) occurs frequently in lactating women and can impact the immune response in HIV-infected individuals, with potential implications for HIV transmission through breast milk.
  • A study involving 165 breast milk samples from both HIV-infected and uninfected women found that SCM was more prevalent in HIV-infected women, but those without SCM exhibited distinct immune marker levels compared to HIV-uninfected women.
  • The results highlighted that HIV infection was linked to specific immune responses in breast milk; HIV-infected women showed fewer and lower increases in immune markers during SCM compared to uninfected women, suggesting a difference in immune response related to HIV status.
