Basilicata and Apulian (BAS-APU) turkeys, a native population in the Basilicata and Puglia regions of southern Italy, are known for their high meat quality and tolerance to local conditions. Understanding the genomic patterns of BAS-APU turkeys is critical for effective breeding and preservation strategies. In this study, we characterized runs of homozygosity (ROH), and selection signatures using the integrated haplotype score (iHS) and ROH approaches.

The increase in ambient temperature is responsible for a behavioral, physiological, and metabolic responses known as heat stress, which affects dairy cows' general well-being, health, reproduction, and productivity. Focusing on the functioning of the mammary gland, attention has been recently paid to a new method of cell-cell communication mediated by extracellular vesicles, which with their cargo can affect the target cells' phenotypic traits, behavior, and biological functions. This study investigated whether the small extracellular vesicles (sEV) isolated from milk of heat-stressed Holstein Friesian (H) and Brown Swiss (B) cows affect the cellular response of a bovine mammary epithelial cell line (BME-UV1).

Article Synopsis
  • Italian local turkey populations are crucial for maintaining genetic diversity, and efforts should focus on in vivo preservation methods.
  • Advanced genomic techniques, including whole genome sequencing and genotyping, revealed significant genetic variability and isolation among different turkey populations in Italy.
  • Findings highlight the role of selective sweeps in shaping genetic traits related to heat stress and growth, suggesting potential benefits in adapting to climate change, which can inform conservation and selection strategies for these turkeys.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of probiotic bacteria (Pediococcus acidilactici BX-B122 and Bacillus coagulans BX-B118) on methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide, and fermentation profile of dietary Delonix regia seeds in ruminant. Ruminal contents from slaughtered rams and steers were used as inoculum for in vitro fermentation system. The total gas, methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide volume, as well as pH and dry matter degradability, were quantified in three fermentation cycles.

Article Synopsis
  • Heat stress significantly impacts canine reproductive performance and overall health, leading to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and sperm dysfunction.
  • A study conducted on 36 male dogs compared those exposed to heat stress (HS) with those in stable temperatures (TN) over 90 days, measuring various health parameters.
  • Results indicated HS dogs experienced decreased protein and antioxidant levels, increased ROS in sperm, and reduced semen quality compared to TN dogs, particularly noticeable after 30 days.
