Domain Wall Color Code.

We introduce the domain wall color code, a new variant of the quantum error-correcting color code that exhibits exceptionally high code-capacity error thresholds for qubits subject to biased noise. In the infinite bias regime, a two-dimensional color code decouples into a series of repetition codes, resulting in an error-correcting threshold of 50%. Interestingly, at finite bias, our color code demonstrates thresholds identical to those of the noise-tailored XZZX surface code for all single-qubit Pauli noise channels.

The modality effect: a result of methodology?

Modality differences for short-term (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) were investigated. Sixty-eight subjects participated in one of four conditions: Auditory STM, Verbal STM, Auditory LTM, and Verbal LTM. Analysis of the number of words correctly recalled showed a significant interaction between modality and store.

A new ergonomically improved lathe.

Following frequent complaints of lower back pain by lathe operators, a working group from the Philips Ergonomics Department have produced a model of an ergonomically improved lathe which ensures a healthy posture for the lathe operator at work. The same healthy posture can be adopted whether the operator is sitting or standing. The operator also has a good view of his work.
