Fy3 is a high-prevalence red blood cell antigen of the Duffy (Fy) blood group system. Anti-Fy3 antibodies are rare and solely arise in individuals with a Duffy null phenotype (Fy(a-b-)), which is a phenotype that mainly occurs in people of African descent. Clinically, anti-Fy3 antibodies can cause both acute and delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions in adults as well as hemolytic disease in fetuses and newborns.

Introduction: The incidence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in the Belgian community is mainly estimated based on test results of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-like symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) positivity ratio and distribution of viral loads within a cohort of asymptomatic patients screened prior hospitalization or surgery, stratified by age category.

Materials/methods: We retrospectively studied data on SARS-CoV-2 real-time RT-PCR detection in respiratory tract samples of asymptomatic patients screened pre-hospitalization or pre-surgery in nine Belgian hospitals located in Flanders over a 12-month period (1 April 2020-31 March 2021).

Introduction: Standardization of BCR-ABL1 messenger RNA quantification by real-time PCR on the International Scale (IS) is critical for monitoring therapy response in chronic myelogenous leukaemia. Since 2006, BCR-ABL1 IS standardization is propagated along reference laboratories by calculating a laboratory-specific conversion factor (CF), co-ordinated in Europe through the European Treatment and Outcome Study project. Although this process has proven successful to some extent, it has not been achievable for all laboratories due to the complexity of the process and the stringent requirements in terms of numbers of samples to be exchanged.

Molecular diagnostic testing has become an important tool in clinical laboratories. Accreditation according to the international quality standard ISO15189:2007 for medical laboratories is required for reimbursement of several molecular diagnostic tests in Belgium. Since the ISO15189:2007 standard applies to medical laboratories in general, the particular requirements for quality and competence are mentioned in general terms, not taking into account the specificities of molecular biology testing.
