The metabolic landscape of tetrahydrobiopterin metabolism disorders in the Republic of Ireland.

We present a case series of seven patients (5 males, 2 females, aged 7-38 yrs.) in Ireland with biopterin metabolism disorder. Five individuals had been diagnosed with dihydropteridine reductase (DHPR) deficiency and two with pyruvoyl tetrahydropterin synthase (PTPS) deficiency.

Infants Diagnosed with Athyreosis on Scintigraphy May Have a Gland Present on Ultrasound and Have Transient Congenital Hypothyroidism.

Unlabelled: Scintigraphy using technetium-99m (99mTc) is the gold standard for imaging the thyroid gland in infants with congenital hypothyroidism (CHT) and is the most reliable method of diagnosing an ectopic thyroid gland. One of the limitations of scintigraphy is the possibility that no uptake is detected despite the presence of thyroid tissue, leading to the spurious diagnosis of athyreosis. Thyroid ultrasound is a useful adjunct to detect thyroid tissue in the absence of 99mTc uptake.

Maple syrup urine disease: Clinical outcomes, metabolic control, and genotypes in a screened population after four decades of newborn bloodspot screening in the Republic of Ireland.

Since 1972, 18 patients (10 females/8 males) have been detected by newborn bloodspot screening (NBS) with neonatal-onset maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) in Ireland. Patients were stratified into three clusters according to clinical outcome at the time of data collection, including developmental, clinical, and IQ data. A fourth cluster comprised of two early childhood deaths; a third patient died as an adult.
