The use of autologous bone for augmentation procedures leads to low prevalence of peri-implantitis-a retrospective study over a 20-year period.

The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of peri-implantitis in implants inserted into pristine bone (control) to implants where autologous bone was used for grafting procedures (study). All patients who underwent implant surgery during a 20 years interval by one maxillofacial implant surgeon and received a prosthodontic rehabilitation afterwards were eligible for inclusion in the study. Periimplant bone resorption and periimplant disease were assessed.

Combined internal and external Le Fort III distraction osteogenesis--the "elusive vector".

This article describes a modified surgical technique using both internal and external distractors for distraction osteogenesis at the Le Fort III level. This technique optimizes vector control, superior to single-device techniques, resulting in excellent control and, ultimately, a functional occlusion.

Non-syndromic orofacial clefts in Southern Italy: pattern analysis according to gender, history of maternal smoking, folic acid intake and familial diabetes.

Background: Genetic studies have demonstrated that non-syndromic clefts of the lip, alveolus and palate have an heterogeneous genetic background, and that environmental factors contribute to the onset of this malformation. Therefore studies on different and homogeneous populations can be useful in detecting potentially related environmental and genetic factors.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether gender, folic acid intake, family history of diabetes and/or smoking during pregnancy were associated with a specific type of cleft in a group of patients affected by non-syndromic clefts, collected from Southern Italy.

Callusmassage. A new treatment modality for non-unions of the irradiated mandible.

Recent reports on orthopaedic surgery focus on mechanical stimulation of the regenerate during distraction therapy of non-unions in long-bone-surgery. In the field of maxillofacial surgery, callus stimulating techniques are rarely reported. The case of a 65-year-old man with a radiogenic mandibular non-union after ablative tumour therapy and pre-operative radiation therapy presented with a non-union.
