Aims: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained heart arrhythmia and a major preventable cause of stroke. Stroke accounts for a large amount of health and social care funding and over the coming years is likely to place an increasing cost burden on the wider UK health care system. We therefore need to understand how an opportunistic AF screening programme would impact on healthcare costs of AF (and AF-related stroke) for the NHS.

Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained heart arrhythmia and a major preventable cause of stroke, heart failure, and dementia. Atrial fibrillation already accounts for a significant amount of National Health Service (NHS) funding, and over the coming years is highly likely to impose a growing cost on NHS budgets and the wider UK healthcare system. We, therefore, need greater understanding of the main cost drivers (e.

The degradation mechanism of La(Fe,Mn,Si)13Hx has been examined under conditions representative of the complex operating parameters of a refrigeration cycle. The magnetic field effects are found to be dominated by magneto-transport and are most significant when the material is in its paramagnetic state - resulting in significantly accelerated corrosion rates.

Ataxia associated with myelopathy and low liver copper concentrations is described in a blesbok (Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi) and black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) from the Karoo Nature Reserve, Graaff-Reinet. This syndrome, which occurs in neonatal and delayed forms, has been described in sheep, goats, pigs and domesticated red deer, but reports in other ungulates, including antelope, are very rare and generally unconfirmed by histopathological examination. The 2 animals examined exhibited a typical pattern of Wallerian degeneration in selected tracts of the spinal cord.

In an earlier study we used various electrophoretic techniques to investigate the proteins in amniotic fluid, including two-dimensional electrophoresis. However, the high proportion of albumin dominated the pattern and tended to distort the pH gradient. Improved methodology, based upon the removal of albumin with Blue Sepharose CL6B and the silver-staining technique, has been used in the present work.
