An additional record of Kyphosus vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) (Osteichthyes, Kyphosidae) from Sicily clarifies the confused situation of the Mediterranean kyphosids.

The lowfin chub, Kyphosus vaigiensis, is reported for the first time off Favignana Island, Sicily, central Mediterranean Sea. The specimen was identified on the basis of morphometric and meristic characters as well as mitochondrial DNA sequences (COI and 16S-rDNA). Two, perhaps three, Kyphosus species-K.

An unusual case of three synchronous tumors in a young woman.

The occurrence in the same young patient of three synchronous tumors deriving from different embryogenic tissues and without a clear correlation with a common etiopathogenic factor is very unusual. We report a case of a Caucasian woman submitted to wide resection of a large retroperitoneal liposarcoma and right radical nephrectomy for suspected tumor infiltration. Histological examination of the right ureter and renal pelvis showed the presence of a multifocal urothelial carcinoma that was clinically asymptomatic.

Increased levels of NF-kappaB inhibitors (IkappaBalpha and IkappaBgamma) in the intestinal mucosa of Crohn's disease patients during infliximab treatment.

The treatment with infliximab is employed successfully in Crohn's disease (CD) but predictors of efficacy are lacking. Activation of the transcription factor NF-kB has been demonstrated in CD and its inhibition is one of the mechanisms by which anti-inflammatory agents exert their effects. We evaluated the production of TNFalpha by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and the levels of NF-kappaB family molecules in the intestinal mucosa during infliximab therapy in 12 patients.

The authors describe a case of amyloidosis associated with an electrophoretic picture, characterized by a monoclonal band with an M component in the alpha 2 and beta regions, in presence of para IgA-lambda. The case casually discovered in the course of a cerebral vascular manifestation and confirmed by bioptic exams, had negative results after four years due to an extremely progressive course involving intestine, liver and kidney, as a consequence of the extension of amyloidosis deposits.
