Evaluating the Protective Role of Intranasally Administered Avian-Derived IgY Against SARS-CoV-2 in Syrian Hamster Models.

Background/objectives: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for alternative prophylactic measures, particularly for populations for whom vaccines may not be effective or accessible. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of intranasally administered IgY antibodies derived from hen egg yolks as a protective agent against SARS-CoV-2 infection in Syrian golden hamsters, a well-established animal model for COVID-19.

Methods: Hens were immunized with the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 to generate IgY antibodies.

Viral gene expression profile of goose haemorrhagic polyomavirus in susceptible primary cells.

Routine culturing of goose haemorrhagic polyomavirus (GHPV) is cumbersome, and limited data are available about its replication and gene expression profile. In this study, goose embryo fibroblast cells were infected with GHPV for temporal measurement of the viral genome copy number and mRNA levels with quantitative PCR. Accumulation of small and large tumour antigen-encoding mRNAs was detected as early as 9 hours post-infection (hpi), while high level expression of the capsid protein encoding VP1-VP3, and ORF-X mRNAs was first detected at 24 hpi.

Vaccine Protection Against Experimental Challenge Infection with a PPV-27a Genotype Virus in Pregnant Gilts.

Background/introduction: Porcine parvovirus (PPV), the causative agent of severe reproductive failures in pigs, is present worldwide. The witnessed spread of the virulent 27a type PPV strains since its recognition raised concerns about the efficacy of the available commercial vaccines.

Methods: To address this question, vaccinated pregnant gilts were challenged with a PPV-27a-like virus strain and parameters related to vaccine efficacy were compared.

Q fever epidemic in Hungary, April to July 2013.

We investigated a Q fever outbreak with human patients showing high fever, respiratory tract symptoms, headache and retrosternal pain in southern Hungary in the spring and summer of 2013. Seventy human cases were confirmed by analysing their serum and blood samples with micro-immunofluorescence test and real-time PCR. The source of infection was a merino sheep flock of 450 ewes, in which 44.
