Year after year: Recurrent infections in American bison () calves in a zoo.

(Nematoda: Ascaridida) is a common parasite of cattle and buffaloes in tropical and subtropical regions and the causative agent of toxocarosis in calves. In Europe, sporadic infections have been reported in cattle, but also in bovines held at zoological gardens. Here, we report infections in a herd of American bison () kept at the Vienna Zoo, Austria, which occurred in 2023 and 2024.

Mitochondrial respiratory capacity in kidney podocytes is high, age-dependent, and sexually dimorphic.

Whether and how podocytes depend on mitochondria across their long post-mitotic lifespan is yet unclear. With limited cell numbers and broad kidney distribution, isolation of podocyte mitochondria typically requires first isolating podocytes themselves. Disassociation of podocytes from their basement membrane, however, recapitulates an injured state that may stress mitochondria.

Phase 1 clinical trial of Hantaan and Puumala virus DNA vaccines delivered by needle-free injection.

Hantaan virus (HTNV) and Puumala virus (PUUV) are pathogenic zoonoses found in Asia and Europe, respectively. We conducted a randomized Phase 1 clinical trial of individual HTNV and PUUV DNA vaccines targeting the envelope glycoproteins (GnGc), as well as a combined HTNV/PUUV DNA vaccine delivered at varying doses using the PharmaJet Stratis® needle-free injection system (NCT02776761). Cohort 1 and 2 vaccines consisted of 2 mg/vaccination of HTNV or PUUV plasmid, respectively.

Coronaviruses are highly transmissible respiratory viruses that cause symptoms ranging from mild congestion to severe respiratory distress. The recent outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has underscored the need for new antivirals with broad-acting mechanisms to combat increasing emergence of new variants. Currently, there are only a few antivirals approved for treatment of SARS-CoV-2.

Implementation of a High-Value, Evidence-Based Care Program: Impact and Opportunities for Learning Organizations.

Goal: Value-based care is not simply a matter of cost, but also one of outcomes and harms per dollar spent. This definition encompasses three key components: healthcare delivery that is organized around patients' medical conditions, costs and outcomes that are actively and consistently measured, and information technology that enables the other two components. Our objective in this project was to implement and measure a systemwide high-value, evidence-based care initiative with five pillars of high-value practices.
