Objective: Although seizures are the cardinal feature, epilepsy is associated with other forms of brain dysfunction including impaired cognition, abnormal sleep, and increased risk of developing dementia. We hypothesized that, given the widespread neurologic dysfunction caused by epilepsy, accelerated brain aging would be seen. This study analyzed variability in sleep parameters recorded over multiple nights of sleep in an ecological setting using a portable sleep monitor and then estimated the minimum sample sizes required to reliably account for inter- and intra-individual variability in sleep parameters.
Methods: Participants were males who self-reported the absence of sleep disorders, and used a sleep monitoring device (Dreem Headband, Dreem, France) over multiple nights of sleep.
Recent studies have shown that slow oscillations (SOs) can be driven by rhythmic auditory stimulation, which deepens slow-wave sleep (SWS) and improves memory and the immune-supportive hormonal milieu related to this sleep stage. While different attempts have been made to optimise the driving of the SOs by changing the number of click stimulations, no study has yet investigated the impact of applying more than five clicks in a row. Likewise, the importance of the type of sounds in eliciting brain responses is presently unclear.
